The final project that I worked on during my New York trip was to a short video piece. Videography is something of which I have very limited experience at this moment in time, however it’s something which I’m keen to explore in the future. I was so eager to come back from my trip with a diverse range of work and having already shot a couples shoot and a fashion editorial, the opportunity to do something with video was all too tempting. My previous experience with moving pictures has been limited to behind the scenes footage and a couple of short experimental pieces but I didn’t want to let that put me off.
It was my last night in the city, so I’d treated myself to a nice hotel suite on the Upper West Side with the intention of using it for a shoot. During the weeks of prep work prior to flying out, I’d arranged to work with Priscilla who is a lingerie designer based in Miami. She was flying in especially for this shoot and bringing along a few items from her new collection. Our model was resident New Yorker, Veronika Payne who had rushed over to us after already shooting elsewhere earlier in the day. One thing I learnt on this trip was that assembling a team to work with in a different country is fricking hard work, so these girls did me a huge favour by arranging our make-up artist (Natalia) and hair-stylist (Ava) before I’d even arrived in the U.S. I’d also had a nice surprise when just a couple of days before setting off, I was sent a package containing some pieces from awesome lingerie accessory designer, Fräulein Kink in Germany.
The concept was quite simple. ‘Room 53’ was a place behind the curtain and somewhere hidden from the rest of the world where someones alter ego or inner self is allowed to breathe freely. The woman who walks through the door from the outside world is very different to the one who is revealed once that door is closed.
Despite filming moving pictures feeling very unnatural compared to my usual style, and this being one hell of a long afternoon/night, I had an awesome time shooting this piece. These girls were really cool to work with. I’m also especially happy with the ‘storyboard’ of images which are there to compliment the video. Take a look at both, I hope you enjoy.
